Christmas in AugustChristmas in August- The GA’s are asking the church for help in sending coats, toiletries and money for the Edgewood Baptist Center in Dayton, Ohio. This is the church where James and Hilary Taylor serve as North American missionaries. We will be collecting items and money through the first week in September. A short history of Christmas in August. In 1927, former missionary to China, Elizabeth Wiley spoke to a church in Charlottesville, Virginia about the children in China. A leader suggested that the children send Christmas gifts to the children in China. There were 100 gifts that year. Eventually, children from other Baptist churches in Virginia began sending Christmas gifts each year. In 1937, due to war, the gifts did not reach China. After that, the children and leaders decided to send their gifts to missionaries in North America. In 1950, this ministry was named Christmas in August. Today, North American missionaries make a wish list of the supplies they need for their ministries. GA’s and other WMU groups collect the supplies and send them to the missionaries. Missionaries use the Christmas in August gifts to help others and to tell others about Jesus. Let’s support our GAs in this ministry.
